The Flash premiered at CinemaCon 2023 in Las Vegas to incredibly positive reviews, and now director Andy Muschietti is updating fans on the progress of the movie's lead, Ezra Miller, and their mental health recovery.
According to Vanity Fair, Muschietti discussed Miller's mental health after a turbulent time in which the actor frequently found himself in the news. The director claims that Miller has since apologised for their behaviour and that they appear dedicated to improving. Ezra is now OK, added Muschietti. "We're all hoping for their recovery. Although [they] are dealing with mental health difficulties and making recovery-related progress, [they] are in good health. They recently spoke with us, and [they] are highly motivated to improve.
Muschietti's remarks coincide with those made by DC co-head Peter Safran when he talked about Miller's place in the DC Universe after the June release of The Flash. According to Safran, "Ezra is fully committed to their recovery and we are fully supportive of that journey that they're currently on." "We'll all decide on the best course of action when the moment is appropriate and they feel prepared to have the conversation. However, they are entirely concentrated on their rehabilitation at the moment. And it seems like they're progressing a lot from our talks with them over the past few months.
When The Flash star Miller was detained in Hawaii in March 2022 for disorderly behaviour and harassment, Miller's legal issues started to spread. Miller was the subject of a restraining order request from the couple who were involved in the incident after Miller allegedly threatened to kill them before snatching their wallet, passport, and social security card. In the end, the couple lifted the restraining order, but Miller would soon face new difficulties. Tokata Iron Eyes' parents accused Miller of kidnapping and grooming the then-18-year-old back in June. Miller was served with a restraining order after Iron Eyes' parents claimed the actor had used "cult-like and psychologically manipulative, controlling behaviour" to take advantage of their daughter. Iron Eyes, however, repeatedly refuted her parents' assertions, calling the matter "a disgusting and irresponsible smear campaign"
Nevertheless, Miller was later detained by Vermont State Police after they discovered evidence that they had broken into a house earlier in the year. Miller allegedly found several alcohol bottles stolen from the residence, even though the owners weren't there when he entered. Miller was accused of trespassing without permission, breaking into two vacant homes, and petit larceny.
Miller's path to probable recovery began when the actor admitted guilt in the Vermont case to misdemeanour charges of unauthorised trespassing notwithstanding all their difficulties. Miller consented to a year of probation, a $500 fine, and a $192 surcharge as part of their plea agreement. Miller was found not guilty of any more offences, including burglary and petit robbery. The actor also consented to the terms of "substance-free living," which means they will continue their mental health therapy and refrain from drinking if it interferes with their profession. Miller apologised publicly for their behaviour prior to the plea deal and then made a reference to their mental health recovery. The performer said they were looking for expert assistance for "complex mental health issues" and were totally "committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe, and productive stage."
