The procedural drama first premiered on ABC in October 2018, starring Nathan Fillion as John Nolan. Nolan is a freshly divorced 45-year-old who relocates to Los Angeles to become the oldest rookie in the Los Angeles Police Department.
“It’s a police show, so there’s a lot of drama and excitement there. But I think there’s something relatable about the redo and the restart,” Fillion told Toronto Sun about the show’s success.
“Dropping everything and push into something entirely different. That’s a new reality for a lot of people, especially coming out of the pandemic. We’ve all reprioritized and made changes. People have quit jobs and people can relate to change,” he added.

How did The Rookie season 5 leave off?
While information about the plot of season 6 has not been shared yet, it’s likely to start off on a tense note given the thrilling end to season 5 in May.
“Under Siege” began with Aaron Thorsen (Tru Valentino) and Celina Juarez’s (Lisseth Chavez) walking home after a long game of Dungeons & Dragons. They split up to investigate suspicious noises and are suddenly ambushed by a group in scary masks. Thorsen was critically shot and Juarez was nearly unconscious but able to call 911 for help.
Nolan and Bailey are attacked in their home, and Nyla’s baby girl Lyla is kidnapped from her crib shortly after. Nolan and Bailey thankfully survived the attack, and Nyla and James found their daughter outside of their home.
Chen and Bradford, better known to viewers by their couple name “Chenford,” are also swarmed by masked attackers while hunting down a lead. Elsewhere, Diaz and Wesley welcome their baby girl safely in the hospital.
The leader of the masked men is revealed to be Luke Moran, who previously appeared in season 1. He held a grudge against the officers at the Mid-Wilshire police station after he was arrested for elder abuse and ultimately dies at the hands of police forces. But as more police reinforcements arrive on the scene, two vehicles head in the opposite direction with a mystery man (Kristian Brunn) praising the distraction Moran and his team created.
Aside from the introduction of a new villain, the other major cliffhanger viewers were left with is the unknown fate of Thorsen, who is in a coma. As the finale came to a close, a “code blue” (cardiac or respiratory arrest) is called as hospital workers rush into his hospital room while Juarez stands nearby.
