Over 13 years after Emma Stone made her Saturday Night Live hosting debut, actress has joined one of the most exclusive clubs in television history — that of the elite “Five-Timers Club.”
Stone took the helm of the long-running sketch comedy series for the fifth time on Dec. 2, kicking things off with a couple of special guest cameos and a presentation of that coveted jacket for the club members.
Saturday night, Stone was all smiles when she stepped onto the SNL stage at 30 Rock, saying just how honored she was to be the newest member of the club that celebrated five-time hosts of the show, now in its 49th season. No sooner had she begun to speak than Tina Fey joined her, welcoming her to the club.

“At 35 years old, you are officially the youngest member. I am the second youngest at 53,” she said, although that’s not a title Fey holds. That honor would go to Scarlett Johansson at 39, followed by Drew Barrymore at 48, and Melissa McCarthy at 53.
“A few years ago, they even added a whole women’s section. It was actually Candice Bergen’s idea.” With that, Bergen joined them. She told Stone that the club has got everything, including showers, a locker room and a “big portrait with the eyes cut out so Martin Short can peek in.”
Bergen, 77, joked that the women’s section started out as “a small quiet place to cry” but, over the years, became a “big luxurious place to cry.” Now, Stone was a part of SNL history or, as Bergen put it, SNL HERstory. And that also meant that coveted velvet, purple and black official Five Timers Club jacket. Fey was handed one from the side and slipped it on Stone, who wore with it a grin from ear to ear.
“This is amazing,” she beamed. “This honestly, this has been a dream of mine since I was a kid. And it means so much that I get to share this moment with you guys. So thank you.” As she reached into the pockets, she felt something inside.
“Is this a joint?” she asked, pulling out, well, a joint.
“Oh, that must be Woody Harrelson’s jacket,” Bergen said.
Stone reached in further and pulled out something else. “There’s also a vaccine card in here.”
“Oh, then it’s definitely not Woody’s,” Fey responded.
The actress, who met her husband Dave McCary while filming an episode of SNL in 2016, first hosted in Oct. 2010. Her second gig was in 2011, followed by the 2016 stint the led to her and comedy writer McCary’s romance, and then, most recently, in 2019.
In the lead-up to this week’s episode, Stone appeared in a fun teaser alongside musical guest Noah Kahan and cast member Sarah Sherman. Previously, in a separate, solo clip, Stone starred in black-and-white under a spotlight on the Studio 8H stage.
“What’s the secret to comedy?” she asked into a microphone. After waiting just a few beats to long, Stone said, “Timing.”
The “Five-Timers Club” has some fairly noteworthy members, in addition to Stone. Steve Martin has hosted Saturday Night Live 16 times, for example, while Tom Hanks has hosted 10 times. Justin Timberlake, Ben Affleck, and Melissa McCarthy have also been at the helm of the show five times.
