After undergoing vocal cord surgery in June 2022 to correct loose vocal cords that had impacted his voice, Jon Bon Jovi is eager to return to the stage.
In an interview at the opening of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's latest exhibit dedicated to Bon Jovi, the 62-year-old rock star discussed his return to live performances following his surgery.
When asked if he's reclaiming his voice with Bon Jovi's new album "Forever," Jon replied, "I guess I am."
Reflecting on his recent performance, he shared, "We performed last night in Nashville, and everything went very well."
"Step by step, I'm getting back to it," added Jon, who has four children with his wife Dorothea Bongiovi: Stephanie, 31, Jesse, 29, Jake, 22, and Romeo, 20.
Jon revealed more about his vocal cord issues in his new docuseries, "Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story". He started experiencing problems around 2015 but only addressed them after a difficult conversation with his wife during a tour in 2022. Realizing he had to either seek medical help or retire, he chose surgery, which he underwent in June 2022.
Post-surgery, Jon has been working with vocal coaches and doing daily voice exercises. "Every day is part of the recovery process," he told. He acknowledged that while he can sing, performing for two and a half hours a night, four nights a week, is still a challenge. "But I’m aspiring to get that back," he said.
Jon also sought advice from his friend Shania Twain, who had a similar surgery in 2018. "She’s been my spirit sister in this," he said of the "Any Man of Mine" singer. Twain reassured Jon about the surgery's outcome, though she humorously admitted to encouraging him with an optimistic recovery timeline to prevent him from backing out. "I couldn't wait to get the operation," Jon added.
"Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story" is currently streaming on Hulu. Tickets for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame can be purchased online.
