Mamie Laverock, known for her role in "When Calls the Heart", is on a long road to recovery after a harrowing fall from a hospital balcony in Vancouver on May 26. Her mother, Nicole Rockmann, has posted an update on her condition.
In a Facebook post on June 26, Nicole expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support: "Thank you for your healing messages for Mamie. Mamie survived her injuries, however, her road to recovery will be long. I will be setting up a mailbox for all of your cards and well wishes shortly." She signed off warmly, "Warmth, Nicole."
A previous update on June 7 showed Mamie still in the hospital, recovering from the critical injuries sustained from her fall. The post included a photo of Mamie's hand with an IV cannula, holding a teddy bear, while she lay in a hospital bed.
On May 30, a family spokesperson confirmed that Mamie had undergone surgery. On the same day, Nicole shared with the Los Angeles Times that Mamie had "opened her eyes" for the first time since the incident, expressing hope for her daughter's recovery: "Let's just hope this is the turnaround and she's going to get through this now. I couldn't be happier that people reached out and cared. The story will be told."
Nicole also emphasized that the fall was not intentional and held St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver accountable, stating that Mamie fell while being escorted around the facility. "This is an absolute miracle and there will be accountability," she said, clarifying that it was neither intended nor a suicide attempt. "All we care about is that Mamie can make a recovery and that she’s alive and that she’s fighting and that she’s strong. It's unbelievable that she’s with us."
A representative from Providence Health Care, which operates St. Paul's Hospital, told they do not comment on patient-related matters due to privacy policies. However, they confirmed an internal review would be conducted to improve patient safety, offering their best wishes for Mamie's recovery.
The ordeal began on May 11, when Mamie was taken to a Winnipeg hospital by her mother due to a medical emergency. She was later transferred to the Vancouver hospital. According to a GoFundMe page set up by her family, Mamie was escorted out of a secure unit and taken to a balcony walkway, from which she fell five stories. The fall resulted in life-threatening injuries, multiple surgeries, and she is currently on life support. "We are all devastated, in shock, at this intensely difficult time," wrote Nicole and her husband Rob on the campaign page.
The Quran - Chapter Al-Waqi'ah : 83 - 85
Why then ˹are you helpless˺ when the soul ˹of a dying person˺ reaches ˹their˺ throat,
while you are looking on?
And We are nearer to such a person than you, but you cannot see.
