"A few days ago, Jonny became seriously ill from an infection that needed emergency hospital treatment, some of it in intensive care," wrote the band.
The Smile, an English rock band featuring Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead as well as Tom Skinner, will not be touring Europe this year as previously planned.
The group announced in a July 12 statement shared to Instagram that Greenwood, 52, was recently hospitalized for an "emergency" medical issue, and therefore the trio must cancel its upcoming European tour, set for August.
"A few days ago, Jonny became seriously ill from an infection that needed emergency hospital treatment, some of it in intensive care," read the Smile's statement about the musician, who plays guitar, bass and keys for the band.
"Mercifully he is now out of danger and will soon return home. We have been instructed by the medical team in charge of Jonny’s care to cancel all engagements until he has had time to make a full recovery," continued the note.
"To that end, the Smile tour of Europe in August is canceled. Refunds for headline shows will be available from your ticket provider," concluded the statement. "We all wish Jonny a speedy recovery."
In August, the band was set to play concerts in European countries including Latvia, Poland, Germany, Austria, France and Spain.
The Smile released its second album, Wall of Eyes, in January. Since then, the band has performed a handful of shows throughout the United States and Europe.
After forming in 2020, the band made its surprise debut at the 2021 Glastonbury Festival in Pilton, Somerset, England. The trio's first album, A Light for Attracting Attention, was released in May 2022 — and both of their full-length projects have charted top-5 in the United Kingdom.
In a May interview with The Guardian, Greenwood offered an update on Radiohead's plans to work on new music.
"Well, the Smile are on tour, Ed is making another solo record, Colin is playing bass with Nick Cave – they’ve just done five sold-out nights at the Sydney State theatre – so lots of music is being made. Just not as Radiohead," he said at the time.
"We’re still talking all the time, we just need to make a plan and get some time together sorted out in advance. I’ve never been very good at that. Too busy d---ing around in this studio," continued Greenwood.
The Quran - Chapter Al-Hashr: 11
Have you ˹O Prophet˺ not seen the hypocrites who say to their fellow disbelievers from the People of the Book, “If you are expelled, we will certainly leave with you, and We will never obey anyone against you. And if you are fought against, we will surely help you.”? But Allah bears witness that they are truly liars.
