The 'Saturday Night Live' alum opened up about family life and the "relief" of Munn aiding his addiction recovery to 'GQ' for their Man of the Year issue
John Mulaney is opening up about his addiction recovery journey — and the support he is receiving along the way.
The Saturday Night Live alum, 42, who was revealed as GQ’s 2024 Man of the Year on Tuesday, Nov. 12, spoke candidly to the publication about his whirlwind year as a new father of two, as well as his ongoing recovery from addiction.
“There was a time when I would have told you that I could not fly, sleep, or perform unless I had a Klonopin,” Mulaney told the outlet. “I would have said, ‘It sucks because I don’t always want to take Klonopin and Xanax, but I have to.’ ”
The comedian, who checked himself into rehab for cocaine and alcohol dependency in December 2020, recalled one “insane” night at the height of his addiction when he had taken so many drugs he thought he would die.
“I thought, ‘Okay … I’m going to totally slow down. That was like a Tuesday. And Thursday night, I did it again,” he said.
Mulaney shared that his wife Olivia Munn chose to stage a mini-intervention of her own to involve herself more in his recovery journey. When she was six months pregnant, Mulaney said she also decided that she would administer random drug tests to ensure he remains on the road to a successful recovery.
“It’s like a relief … I like to be able to not even have that be a question in her or anyone else’s mind,” said Mulaney. “Something about peeing in that cup is like, I’m walking this walk. It gives me confidence.”
The pair tied the knot in July and share two children, a son Malcolm Hiệp, who turns 3 on Nov. 24, and 2-month-old daughter Méi June, welcomed via a surrogate.
While appearing on the Late Night with Seth Meyers show in 2021, Mulaney called Munn, 44, “incredible” for supporting him in his recovery and that she “held my hand through that hell.”
"[She] got to date me out of recovery, which is what they call a reverse-catch," he joked, adding, "It is a very, very lucky thing to have met this woman."
Munn, who revealed her bilateral breast cancer diagnosis in March, told GQ about meeting Mulaney at that time in his life, “I was watching someone newly sober, at the edge of a cliff, and I didn’t know him well enough to help him.”

When the sky splits open,
and when the stars fall away,
and when the seas burst forth,
and when the graves spill out,
