For an elaborate event known as "fashion's biggest night," the 33-year-old Oscar nominee proved that less is more with her chic-yet-edgy gala ensemble.
Stewart wore a traditional Chanel black-and-white suit with a modernised touch — her white blazer was short and featured a contrasting black collar — to honour the Karl Lagerfeld motif.
She wore it with cut black slacks and a tie that doubled as a bow and had a little Chanel emblem, draped over a nude-and-white collared shirt fashioned to look like a mini vest. The actress completed her look with two-toned loafers and a buckled belt from the French label.
Stewart kept her makeup to a minimum, sporting a fresh face and a little brow pencil. Her short hair was the star of the show, with a dishevelled — yet controlled — 'do that provided a fantastic contrast to her clean, put-together look.
Although Stewart did not attend last year's Met Gala, the event in 2023 will not be her first rodeo.
Stewart had a personal relationship to Chanel's late longterm creative director Lagerfeld, who is being honoured at this year's Met Gala, as a Chanel ambassador.
Stewart opened up about working with Lagerfeld in a 2019 Vanity Fair interview, saying he wasn't as "intimidating" as he appeared.
"He liked what he liked because it was what he liked." "He was a posh motherf---er, but he was true to himself," she explained. "It's almost as if he sensed he was intimidating and said, 'No.'" It's intimidating to have a creative heart, so let's get it beating quicker and harder."
Stewart's personal style has never shied away from bolder appearances, such as having pink hair or bleaching her brows.
"My style is a little edgy and different," she told Vanity Fair before. "It's fun to wear clothes that show off my personality, and it makes me feel a lot more comfortable and confident."
Stewart added, "It's boring if I look like everyone else. I like to be different, even if other people don't like what I'm wearing."
Stewart and fiancée Dylan Meyer have yet to attend the Met Gala as a pair, but they have made several public appearances together since announcing their engagement in November 2021.
Stewart and Meyer have given several glimpses of their relationship since going public with their courtship in 2019, including romantic tributes to one other on social media and various red-carpet appearances.
"Sweetheart, I love you more than all the different shades of green, all the phases of the moon, and all the cats in Los Angeles combined." "I love you more than chunking express, Denis Johnson's already dead, or the raw power of the Stooges," Meyer wrote about Stewart in April, in honour of the latter's 33rd birthday.
