Ethan and Olivia Plath ‘s differences reach an all time high as the couple experience pressures on all fronts.
In a dramatic mid-season teaser of what’s to come on TLC’s Welcome to Plathville, Ethan and Olivia continue through a rough patch in their marriage as the couple attempt to discuss “what’s changed” between them.
“Why are you this way now? You weren’t this way before,” Ethan, 25, grills his wife on her behavior, while Olivia, 25, asks him the same question.
Coincidentally (or not), Olivia posted a quote by Heidi Priebe to Instagram on Sunday — two days after the fifth anniversary of their wedding — which read, in part, “To love someone long-term is to attend a thousand funerals of the person they used to be.”
“When me and Olivia moved up here to Minnesota, we were in a very good place,” Ethan begins in their paired confessional. “That has completely disappeared in a matter of months.”
The scene shifts back to their confrontation, with Olivia claiming, “When we were dating, I thought you respected me.”
Though Ethan may have his own doubts about his marriage, his worries may be fueled by his family member’s concerns as he tells his father Barry Plath of Olivia’s suspicions about his parent’s support.
“She feels like you guys wish that me and her weren’t together,” he tells the Plath family patriarch while his younger brother, Micah, 22, tells him in another clip, “If I was to get married, I would hate for my marriage to look like this.”
In the midst of Ethan and Olivia’s marital problems, Barry and Kim Plath seem to come to odds with their own relationship as Kim pursues new love with her boyfriend Ken.
“For a long time I’ve been in a marriage that I haven’t been happy, and I’m out of that now and to meet someone that really makes me happy — I think it’s long overdue,” she tells the cameras.
Barry, on the other hand, notes that he may outwardly “look like I’m dealing with things moving forward,” but admits he’s harboring some anger towards his ex-wife. When a producer asks if he’s met her new man, he declines to comment and asks to move on to the “next question.”
Eventually, Ethan attempts to escape from his issues with Olivia by visiting Micah in Malibu, Calif. -but his issues seem to catch up to him when younger sister Moriah Plath, 21, enters the picture. The two hadn’t spoken in many months.
“I just came here to see everybody and if he wants to talk then I want to talk,” she tells cameras after the boys help her with her bags when she arrives at the Malibu home.
Ethan adds, “I was looking forward to a trip away from some of my problems. And now I gotta address the issues I have with Moriah.”
The siblings finally reconnect and have an honest conversation while hiking. When they get to the top of the trail, Moriah refers to Olivia, claiming, “She pulled you away from everybody.”
Back in Minnesota, Olivia opens up to a friend about the disconnect she has with Ethan. “He wants kids,” the wedding photographer says of their family planning. “But not — not with me. He doesn’t want a kid that thinks what I think.”
“I am not tolerant of some of the beliefs you have and you are not tolerant of some of the beliefs I have,” Ethan says in their joint confessional while Oliva sits with her arms crossed and her head shaking.
Towards the end of the teaser, Olivia is asked whether or not she has “a regret” that she got “married to him” while Ethan tells cameras, “Going along to get along — that’s a recipe for a miserable life. I don’t want that.”
Things seem to hit a breaking point when Ethan finally walks out of his joint confessional with Olivia, and ends the segment with a resounding, “I’m done. I am done.”
