The View’s Sunny Hostin and her husband, Emmanuel “Manny” Hostin, have been married for over 20 years.
The couple tied the knot in 1998, two years after meeting. Since marrying, Sunny has opened up about her struggles with infertility. After going through multiple miscarriages and IVF treatments, she and Manny welcomed two children, Gabriel and Paloma.
In 2021, Sunny shared a sweet Father’s Day message for her husband on Instagram. “Happy Father’s Day to our very own Super Dad who never ceases to amaze me. My partner and better half. You do all the things,” she wrote alongside a series of family photos. She went on to praise him, listing a number of specific things he does, before ending with, “We are so very lucky to have you in our lives. Besos. ❤️”
Aside from raising two kids, Sunny and Manny are both successful in their respective industries. Along with her gig as co-host of The View, Sunny is the Senior Legal Correspondent and Analyst for ABC News. The former prosecutor-turned-journalist is also a published author. Meanwhile, Manny is a sports doctor and surgeon.
So who is Sunny Hostin’s husband? Here’s everything to know about Emmanuel Hostin and his relationship with the talk show host.
They met at church
The couple met at a church when they were both living in Maryland. In her book, I Am These Truths: A Memoir of Identity, Justice, and Living Between Worlds, Sunny explained that she’d gone to church after a run, noting that she “certainly wasn’t dressed to attend service that day,” when she saw her husband for the first time.
“He was gorgeous, decked out in a beautifully tailored suit,” she wrote. Determined to meet him, she followed him to a nearby bagel shop after the service and struck up a conversation.
The way they met has become something of a “running joke” between them now. “He would tell folks that we’d met in a bagel shop, but I’d let him and everyone else know that we’d met in church,” she wrote. “That’s where the connection happened. He just hadn’t seen me.”
They’ve been married since 1998
Two years after that first meeting, the couple tied the knot. They said “I do” on Aug. 8, 1998, in a small wedding ceremony.
In 2022, Sunny commemorated 24 years together on Instagram. “Happy Anniversary my love. Look at our beautiful family,” she wrote next to photos of an elegant pink cake they bought for the occasion. “Thank you to our wonderful friends for celebrating us in Jamaica. We are grateful.”
He’s an orthopedic surgeon
Manny might not be in the public eye like Sunny, but he’s just as esteemed. He went to John Hopkins School of Medicine and is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. He works as a doctor in New York and has been affiliated with Mount Sinai and Lenox Hill hospitals.
In 2021, Sunny and one of her co-hosts, Ana Navarro, were pulled off stage during a live taping of The View after both falsely tested positive for COVID. Speaking about the moment afterward, she shared how it impacted her family, particularly Manny.
“My husband is a surgeon, as everyone knows, and he was in the operating room and had to be pulled out of the operating room, because God forbid, he’s operating on someone and he’s COVID-positive,” she said.
Sunny also explained that the incident was “particularly triggering” after both of Manny’s parents died from COVID-19 in late 2020. “So you can imagine how I felt, thinking that I could possibly be COVID-positive, and my family could experience another loss, a loss that I don’t think my husband could handle,” she explained.
He volunteered for the Haitian Earthquake Relief Mission
In 2010, Haiti was hit with a series of devastating earthquakes. Manny, who is part Haitian and part Spanish, was one of many New York doctors who volunteered to help provide medical assistance. In return, many people offered him needlepoint artwork as payment.
“He did whatever he could and most people could not pay him,” Sunny told LoHud. “These needlepoints are often some of the most expensive things people owned. For them to give these to my husband was incredibly meaningful. They are priceless.”
They have two kids
After years of trying to get pregnant, Sunny and Manny welcomed their first child, son Gabriel Hostin, on Aug. 15, 2002. Four years later, in May 2006, their daughter Paloma Hostin was born.
In her memoir, Sunny opened up more about her journey with fertility and IVF. During an interview with Windy City Live, she explained that the chapter on motherhood was difficult to write but that she felt it was important.
“I struggled for years with infertility and I was ashamed of it and embarrassed about it for so long,” she said. Continuing, she explained that she had five miscarriages and was on bedrest for seven months while pregnant with her son, which led to a “deep depression.”
“I thought, I need to talk about this so that women know they’re not alone and that it’s nothing to be ashamed of,” she added.
He talked her out of plastic surgery
In the summer of 2022, Sunny decided to get a breast reduction, lift and liposuction. “I feel like a better version of myself,” she told about the cosmetic surgery procedures. “It was a health decision and a self-care decision.”
However, her husband had initially been concerned for her. In fact, two years earlier, both he and her co-host, Joy Behar, had talked her out of it. According to Sunny, Behar warned her of the risks of anesthesia while Manny told her, “You’re beautiful. You’re hot. You’re sexy.”
Eventually, though, she chose to get the procedures done but didn’t tell Manny until just two days before the surgery was scheduled.
“I said, ‘I’m not asking for permission or a discussion or input,’ “ she explained. “‘I’m just giving you information, because I have complete agency over my body, and I need to do this for myself.’ “
As a result, she said she feels happier and more confident. “Now I prance around nude all the time at my house — I feel great,” she said.
They live in New York
Although they met in Maryland, both Sunny and Manny were born in New York and have raised their family there.
In 2018, the couple purchased a 10-bedroom, 10-bathroom 1920s Tudor in Purchase, N.Y. The historic mansion was previously owned by Governor Herbert H. Lehman, but by the time the Hostins moved in, it had become a fixer-upper.
“When I got here, it had no running water, no electricity — there was a bat flying around in the hall,” she told. “It’s been a real labor of love,” she added.
Having a large home also gives them plenty of opportunities for hosting, something the pair enjoys doing.
“Our house is always filled with people, and for a big house, it’s really important,” she explained. “We host an annual Easter egg hunt for 200 kids. We have a Halloween party every year. We’ve had a wedding. We’ve had an engagement party. We’ve had a 50th anniversary party. We’ve had a wake for a celebration of life. We’ve done it all.”
The estate is also home to several pets, including dogs, cats and chickens. “There’s something so magical about walking out of your home at 5:30 in the morning, opening up the coop and there are eggs inside,” she told. “Anyone who raises chickens knows what I’m talking about.”
