"This was quite a surprise," remarked Alexis Ohanian, husband of Serena Williams, upon learning of his Lyme disease diagnosis.

On July 16, the 41-year-old tech entrepreneur and father of two shared the news on X, formerly known as Twitter, after undergoing a series of comprehensive health scans.

"After completing a full range of health tests and scans, I found out I have Lyme disease," he wrote. "It's wild. Thankfully, I have no symptoms, but I'm going to start treatment. My good cholesterol is too low, and my bad cholesterol is just okay. I need to work on that. On the bright side, my testosterone levels are good."

He also mentioned a loved one who had previously struggled with Lyme disease. "A few years back, a loved one showed numerous symptoms and couldn't figure it out until they were tested and diagnosed. They were successfully treated, too," he added.

Lyme disease, as explained by the CDC, is a potentially serious infection caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick. Early symptoms include headaches, flu-like symptoms, joint pain, fatigue, and sometimes a rash resembling a bullseye around the tick bite. If untreated, late-stage Lyme can lead to severe joint pain, neurological issues, memory problems, hearing and vision issues, brain inflammation, and heart inflammation.

Ohanian expressed his surprise at the diagnosis, given his limited time spent in areas prone to ticks. "I spend so little time in the wilderness or the northeast, so this was quite a surprise. Anyway, I'm going to start antibiotics—can't let a tick keep me down!"
