Camila Cabello thought her ex-boyfriend Shawn Mendes was singing on The Voice on Tuesday's episode when contestant Tanner Hower covered his song Mercy.
The 25-year-old new coach appeared startled when she recognized that Tanner, 29, of Huntington Beach, California, was performing the 2016 hit song by Shawn, 24.
'Is that my ... Is that Shawn up there?,' asked Camila who couldn't see Tanner during his Blind Auditions performance.
Tanner continued singing and Camila remarked, 'I thought that was Shawn.'
'Wow,' said fellow coach Gwen Stefani, 52.
Gwen, Blake Shelton and John Legend pressed their buttons for Tanner.
Camila declined to turn around, but was the first to congratulate Tanner for being on The Voice.
'I was like, ''Is Shawn on stage right now?'',' Camila admitted.
'You sounded like him,' John, 43, agreed.
'Wow, wow. You know him best, so that's awesome,' Tanner said.
'I know him better than everybody in this room. But the reason I didn't turn around was I felt like you sounded a little bit too much like him. Obviously, he has an amazing voice. I love this song,' Camila said.
'But I would be curious, when you pick your coach, for you to just kind of distinguish yourself,' she added.
'I really respect Shawn as an artist and I see myself in that lane, but I totally love what you're saying. Thank you so much. I'll try and be more unique,' Tanner told Camila.
'I was in his lane deeply,' Camila said with a giggle.
'Hey! Hey!,' John exclaimed. 'Alright now.'
'Whoa. She said it, we heard it,' quipped Blake, 46.
Tanner picked fellow Orange County native Gwen to be his coach.
'Oh, my gosh! The power of Orange County!,' Gwen exclaimed before handing Tanner a team sweater.
Camila and Shawn started dating in July 2019.
They collaborated on the song Señorita that was released in June 2019 after previously teaming up on the 2015 song I Know What You Did Last Summer.
Camila and Shawn announced their breakup last November.
Tanner before his audition said he was excited to learn Camila would be a coach, but he'd already chosen Mercy by Shawn for his audition.
'It's just funny to think that I'm singing a Shawn Mendes song to Camila Cabello. So I hope she likes it,' Tanner said chuckling.
