Pharrell Williams is a busy man these days, with an abundance of projects in motion. Unfortunately, The Voice doesn’t seem to be one of them.
The 43-year-old tells PEOPLE Now that he’s unsure whether he’ll return to the highly rated music competition show in the foreseeable future.
“I think they’re doing fine without me, and I gotta work,” he says.
Williams joined The Voice in 2014 for its seventh season and graced the red chair until his departure after season 10 wrapped in May. Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys replaced both him and Christina Aguilera for season 11—acting alongside longtime coaches Blake Shelton and Adam Levine.
While he never commented on what led to his own elimination, he’s keeping Voice vets involved with his current music. Williams and Keys joined forces to write a stunning duet for the upcoming film Hidden Figures. He wrote and produced the soundtrack album.
“We worked on a song called ‘Apple’ for [Hidden Figures] and it sounds amazing,” he says about writing the track for the film, which stars Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe, and arrives in theaters on Christmas Day.
