A Million Little Things said its final goodbyes on Wednesday, as its primary characters did as well.

Eddie (David Giuntoli) and Maggie (Allison Miller) arrive in their hospice bed to discover her husband Gary (James Roday Rodriguez) looking sallow, unable to converse, and unwilling to eat. Gary agrees to sip a milkshake, and as Maggie walks away to make it, Gary draws something on his whiteboard that causes Eddie to hesitate while attempting to feed him eggs in an airplane-like fashion.

"Are you sure?" Eddie inquires.

Eddie then calls Rome (Romany Malco) and invites him to his residence. "Are you saying exactly what I think you're saying?" Rome is a marvel.

Rome is shown in a flashback shooting a home movie of Gary when he could walk and speak. Eddie is chastised by Rome and Gary for mistaking Aaron Burr for a black man because of Hamilton. Gary then requests that Rome stop filming and asks him and Eddie "to help me end it."

They try to laugh it off, but Gary adds, "Guys, I'm serious. If things go wrong, I don't want to be locked in a hospital bed, crapping myself and fading away into nothing. So, if we get to that point — which I don't think we will — I need you to go see Kevin, okay? He'll understand why you're there."

Gary explains that nurse Kevin will administer "the right drugs" to "put me out of my misery." Rome objects, saying how Gary and Edie assisted him in overcoming despair. Gary claims that his circumstance is unique, that this is only Plan C, and that Maggie is unaware of it.

"I cannot let Maggie watch me suffer and die from the same disease that she has battled twice," Gary says of his cancer. "It's called 'death with dignity,' and that's all I want."

Rome and Eddie reluctantly agree, but Gary must inform Maggie if the plan is to be carried through.

Back in the present, Gary wrote "Rutledge" on the whiteboard, referring to Jon's (Ron Livingston) plan to ensure he looked after his friends after his death.

With that, Rome and Eddie travel to meet Kevin, who refuses to assist them because it would jeopardise his employment. Instead, Kevin packs a brown paper bag containing what he claims is a gelatin cup for Gary to eat. "Thanks for nothing," an enraged Rome says to Kevin.

In the car, Rome and Eddie try to come up with a Plan B for Plan C, making a list of people who might be able to help them out. Just as Eddie dials Dakota, the wannabe singer who used to supply him with narcotics, Rome reaches into the bag and realises that Kevin came through for them, forcing them to make the most difficult decision of their lives.

Eddie speaks with his ex-wife Katherine (Grace Park), who consoles him by claiming that Gary and Maggie expected this when they decided not to travel to Mexico for the drug study. "Maybe the alternative is even worse" for Gary, Katherine argues to Eddie, and she admits, "You are in an impossible situation."

Their son Theo (Tristan Byon) overhears the exchange and convinces his father to give Gary the medication. "As difficult as it is, it's the most humane thing we can do," says a wise young Theo.

Maggie takes Gary on one more field trip to show him a Boston Bruins billboard that Katherine's wife Greta (Cameron Esposito) had graffitied with the words "Gary was here." When Rome and Eddie get home, they show Maggie the video Gary made explaining Plan C.

"You're not doing this," Maggie tells Eddie and Rome after they watch it. "I am doing it."

So Eddie and Rome go to Katherine's house, where everyone has gathered for dinner to tell stories about Gary, while Maggie gives Gary a mug containing the drugs found in their bed. She assures him that he would be fine since "we have friends all around us" and offers one last "I love you."

In the future, Maggie and Gary's son Javier, aged 16, watches the video his father created for him. Maggie gives Javier a driving lesson and then goes to Gary's grave to inform him she has a date with a father at Javier's school coming up.

Javier's birthday is celebrated with the entire cast, including Jon's daughter Sophie (Lizzy Greene), who is pregnant with Tyrell's (Adam Swain) child. Theo and Jon's son Danny (Chance Hurstfield) join Javier and Tyrell at a Bruins game. They raise a glass to "a band of dads" and take a selfie.

In the video, Gary assures Javi, "Even though I'm gone physically, I'm still here." Our relationship isn't over; it's simply changing."
