According to NBCUniversal, the video game adaption is the tenth animated film in history to accomplish this accomplishment, and it is currently the tenth most successful animated film of all time, surpassing Despicable Me 2 and Minions: The Rise Of Gru in the global market.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie, like its protagonist, has broken even more records by leading the global, domestic, and international box office charts just 26 days after its premiere. With $377 million in global ticket sales, it became the highest-grossing animated picture of all time.
In terms of global box office numbers, the animated feature also became Universal Studios' seventh-biggest film ever, and it is also both the No. 1 animated film and the fourth-biggest film since 2019.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie, directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, is a collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination, the studio behind the Despicable Me and Minions films. The film is now the third title in the latter company's history to gross $1 billion.
Mario, a poor Brooklyn plumber, is mistakenly transported to the mystical Mushroom Kingdom, where he assists Princess Peach (Anya-Taylor Joy) in her fight against the wicked turtle Bowser (Jack Black). Charlie Day plays Luigi, Seth Rogen plays Donkey Kong, Keegan-Michael Key plays Toad, and Fred Armisen plays Cranky Kong.
At the film's Los Angeles premiere earlier this month, Black, 53, told HotGossipNewz that he was proud of the project, for which he recorded his performance remotely, entirely over Zoom.
"It feels like we truly accomplished something. I believe we completed our mission. "We wanted to make a funny, exciting, action-adventure film, and by God, we succeeded," Black remarked. "And guess what else we did? We also used all of the Nintendo universe's characters."
"If you like playing Mario Kart or any of those Nintendo video games, you're going to go, 'Whoa,' because there's a bunch of little Easter eggs that only gamers will recognise and appreciate," he continued. That makes me very happy."
