The day might eventually come when 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way features only happy moments — but that day wasn’t Monday.
This week’s episode showed a few couples turn a corner toward improving their communication, and one family planned a whole new future. In between the moments of clarity, though, came viscous arguments and frustrating misunderstandings.
Kimberly and TJ’s wedding day was full of confusion, while Shekinah’s sister became Sarper ‘s public enemy №1 because of some vulgar phrasing he used to describe his girlfriend’s less-desirable qualities.
Here’s how it all went down, and where the developments from the latest episode leave each couple.
Shekinah and Sarper
Shekinah wasn’t immediately excited for her sister’s visit to Turkey. That’s not because she didn’t want to see the sibling — but because she feared Sarper would say the wrong thing. She warned her boyfriend not to talk about his goals to change her weight, expecting retaliation from her sister.
Sarper did avoid the topic, but found his foot in his mouth for other reasons. It began when he recounted previous arguments in which Shekinah stopped responding to his texts. “If she’s texting, she acts like a slut,” Sarper said. When he saw the reaction from the women, he corrected his working. “I mean bitch.”
Shekinah detailed the moment to cameras. “I cannot believe Sarper is calling me a slut and the B-word right now. I’m horrified. It’s disgusting,” she said. “But he’s trying to express himself in English and he has a limited vocabulary and he’s trying to think of any word to describe me right now in a non-favorable way. Like, wrong time, wrong word. Do not call me that.”
There was little hope for redemption, and things only got worse as the visit continued. The sister challenged Sarper to show Shekinah his Instagram DMs, -or even show her. Sarper became defensive and refused to hand over his phone.
“I’d rather die, you know? I’d rather die than show my DMs to anyone,” Sarper said in an interview. “DMs is a private thing. I’d rather show my DMs, but you will show your panties because it’s your private area. It’s the same thing. I’m not hiding anything, it’s not about that, and they don’t understand this.”
The sister was done with the conversation, and left Sarper’s home before dinner was even served. Of her sister’s fate, she said, “If it doesn’t alarm Shekinah and really raise red flags to her, then I think I’m kind of wasting my time here.”
Kimberly and TJ
It was not a happy wedding morning for Kimberly, who had no idea what was going on. Cameras met the American woman and her parents sitting patiently, waiting to be escorted to one of the many Indian wedding traditions. Kimberly eventually grew angry out of frustration — and confusion — due to the lack of direction.
Tears were shed after the thread ceremony, which Kimberly didn’t understand at all — because there was no translator to assist her. “This ritual is important to TJ. If it’s important to him, I also want to understand what’s going on and the significance and the meaning,” she said. “I don’t just want to go through the motions. I want to know and I want to learn, and I want to experience the culture as much as I can.”
Up next was a Holi ceremony that required friends and family to touch Kimberly and TJ’s feet and cheeks. “I don’t like people touching me in general, at all,” she said. “I especially don’t like people touching my feet. But at the same time, it’s with love and that makes me more comfortable.”
This lifted Kimberly’s spirits and helped her muster excitement for the rest of the jam-packed wedding day.
“We had a little bit of a rough start, but I feel like I’m in a much better headspace,” she said. “This is probably the biggest night of my life, so I don’t want to dwell on the problems anymore. I’m allowing all of the negativity to go away. I just want to have a positive outlook and remain optimistic the rest of the day.”
Kenny and Armando
Kenny and Armando received plenty of good news as they looked ahead to a new chapter as a couple — and as parents.
Sunday night’s episode saw them tell daughter Hannah that the family would be moving to Mexico City and welcoming a baby. The first part went off without a hitch. “I really like living in La Misión, but now that my parents told me I’m moving to Mexico City, since it’s a big city, I’m excited to move to a new city,” Hannah said in an interview.
But the baby news caught her off guard. Hannah was open to the idea — but she asked her dads not bring home an an older child instead of a baby.
Kenny quickly homed in on the insecurity at the root of Hannah’s ask and addressed her fear of being abandoned by Armando.
“You’re always my baby, and you will always be my baby,” Armando assured Hannah. “You know you are my life. You are my reason for being, my reason for existing. And you must always know that. Even if a baby comes along, or something else, you are my №1.”
This helped Hannah feel secure about welcoming a sibling, and she even asked to share a room. She did lay out one condition, though: “I won’t change any diapers.”
Armando was on cloud nine, sharing, “It feels very good to hear that Hannah is OK with our future plans. It shows that she’s happy after this change that we’re going to have, and it’s the best thing I could have asked for.”
Brandan and Mary
Tension from last week had subsided as Brandan and Mary made a pact to work together and stop bickering. Brandan acknowledged he’d been slacking in his adult responsibilities and said he was ready to make a change for the better.
“This conversation is a big reality check for me because we need to grow up and minimize our fighting and arguments,” he said in an interview. “I do not want to raise my child in a chaotic household or with parents who separate. I’ve lived in that sort of environment almost my whole life, so I’m not going to miss this opportunity to show her I can do it. I’m going to step up and fit the bill.”
Mary was honest about her expectations, telling him, “This is the last chance. I really won’t forgive you.” She vowed to prioritize her unborn child and was looking for proof that Brandan could be a supportive father.
In a big step forward, Brandan also got the Mary’s grandfather’s blessing to marry her — naturally, the family wanted them to get married quickly so the baby would not be born out of wedlock.
Daniele and Yohan
A surprising life coach session found Daniele and Yohan communicating well for the first time in a while. Their ongoing arguments about money had simply been driven by misunderstanding, it turned out.
Yohan claimed Daniele previously told him “I can work, you stay in the house taking care of the dog.” But Daniele denied in the therapy session that she’d ever said anything of the sort. “I know in my heart, in my mind, I’ve never said to a man in my life [that] ‘you don’t need to work, I’ll work for you,’” she said. “Never in my life.”
Daniele doubled down in a confessional, insisting, “The suggestion that Daniele would ever make an agreement that she would work all day while her husband sat home and played with the dog is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.”
Daniele told Yohan she found his expectation “funny because it’s so ridiculous and I would never say that — but I understand why, if you thought I said that, you would be confused in this moment.”
Yohan agreed to step up with some “ideas” about how he could contribute more to the household.
“I came in wanting to cause bodily harm to Yohan, but I think it went really well,” Daniele said. “I feel like Yohan is being really open and trying to not be so stubborn, but in order to make our marriage work better, he needs to show me some actions.”
Though Daniele accused Yohan of single-handedly “destroying” their marriage before the session, it seems the pair might have found a better understanding of each other’s needs — and a chance to salvage their relationship.
