Ian McKellen Takes Time Off to Recover from Onstage Fall

Ian McKellen is taking a break to recuperate after a recent fall during a performance in London.

On July 1, the producers of "Player Kings" announced that McKellen's doctors have advised him to take time off to fully recover. As a result, he will not participate in the play's upcoming July tour across the U.K.

"Ian continues to recuperate very well, but he needs the time to rest and ensure a complete recovery. We continue to send him our best wishes," the production stated.

The 85-year-old actor was injured on June 17 during a performance of "Player Kings," a reinterpretation of William Shakespeare's "Henry VI," when he lost his footing during a fight scene, according to BBC News.

Despite initial expectations of a full recovery, McKellen will be out of performances for at least another month. In a July 1 statement shared on social media by "Player Kings," McKellen said, "Two weeks after my accident onstage, my injuries improve day by day. It's with the greatest reluctance that I have accepted the medical advice to protect my full recovery by not working in the meantime."

He expressed his disappointment, saying, "I had been so looking forward to bringing 'Player Kings' to theatre-goers in Bristol, Birmingham, Norwich, and Newcastle. But I can assure them that, with David Semark now playing Falstaff, Robert Icke's production and his acting company remain as dazzling as ever."

Following McKellen's injury, "Player Kings" canceled their June 18 performance to give the actor time to rest. Audience members were evacuated from the June 17 show after his fall, as reported by BBC News.

In a June 18 statement shared with Variety, McKellen thanked his fans and well-wishers, expressing his desire to return to the stage as soon as possible. He said, “Since the accident, during a performance of 'Player Kings' last night, my injuries have been diagnosed and treated by a series of experts, specialists, and nurses working for the National Health Service. To them, of course, I am hugely indebted. They have assured me that my recovery will be complete and speedy, and I am looking forward to returning to work.”
