When she was in college, Kourtney Kardashian had a startling encounter with a scorpion hiding in her bikini bottoms.
Fortunately, Kourtney wasn’t wearing the bikini at the time—she was hand-washing it. However, she recalls the incident as “traumatizing.”
In a new episode of The Kardashians, Kourtney, 45, shares this memory with her best friend Simon Huck. The two are in a Target store, where Kourtney is promoting the in-store launch of Lemme, her line of all-natural supplements.
“What’s a crazy fact about you that I don’t know?” Simon asks Kourtney while she relaxes inside a Target shopping cart.
“I was stung by a scorpion. Did you know that?” Kourtney responds.
“No! When?” Simon asks.
“In college, I was cleaning my bikini bottoms that were hanging in the shower, and a scorpion was in there. It stung my finger,” she explains.
“It was traumatizing.”
Kourtney began her college education in 1998 at Southern Methodist University in Dallas before transferring to the University of Arizona, where she graduated in 2002 with a degree in theater arts and a minor in Spanish.
Scorpions are native to both Texas and Arizona, with Arizona being home to the bark scorpion, the only North American scorpion dangerous to humans, according to the University of Arizona’s Health Sciences. While other scorpion species in the Southwest can cause pain, skin irritation, or swelling, the bark scorpion’s venom can produce symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Kourtney didn’t specify which type of scorpion stung her.
The University of Arizona reports that Poison Control Centers in Arizona receive about 20,000 calls annually regarding scorpion stings, though the actual number of stings is likely higher since many people don’t seek medical attention.
In Kourtney’s case, she needed hospital treatment.
“I had to go to the hospital,” she told Simon, adding, “If you’re allergic to a scorpion, they inject you with goat’s blood.”
Not exactly—although, according to Smithsonian, goat blood (along with blood from horses and sheep) is used to create antivenom serums. Animals like horses or goats are injected with small amounts of venom, and the antibodies produced by their immune systems are harvested through bleeding. This blood serum or plasma is then concentrated and purified into pharmaceutical-grade antivenom.
New episodes of The Kardashians air Thursdays at 12 a.m. ET on Hulu.
The Quran - Chapter Al-Hadid : 20
Know that this worldly life is no more than play, amusement, luxury, mutual boasting, and competition in wealth and children. This is like rain that causes plants to grow, to the delight of the planters. But later the plants dry up and you see them wither, then they are reduced to chaff. And in the Hereafter there will be either severe punishment or forgiveness and pleasure of Allah, whereas the life of this world is no more than the delusion of enjoyment.
