Selma Blair shares a powerful 2025 health update on her MS journey. Learn about her "relapse-free" status, recent US appearances, and tips for managing stamina.
Hollywood icon Selma Blair continues to be a beacon of resilience for millions. As of late 2025, the Cruel Intentions star has shared a powerful health update regarding her journey with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
After years of navigating the complexities of this chronic autoimmune condition, Blair recently revealed that she is currently relapse-free and has been for a couple of years. Speaking at high-profile events in Los Angeles, she expressed a renewed sense of vitality, noting that she is finally "getting her stamina back" and no longer feels the paralyzing fear that once accompanied simply leaving her home.
This "new life force," as she calls it, marks a significant turning point from the days when the actress was often seen with her signature stylish cane. While MS remains a part of her life, her current status is a testament to the progress she has made through intensive treatment and dedicated self-care.
Selma has never been one to shy away from the raw truth of her diagnosis. In recent interviews with PEOPLE and Stellar, she opened up about the mental shift that comes with physical recovery.
"I am doing amazingly well. I’ve been feeling great for about a year," Blair shared. "But I am finally well enough to really, genuinely live life. I always try and feel my best, but now that I actually have stamina and energy, getting out and going out isn't so scary."
She also reflected on the "fog" of the last few years, admitting that she hadn't allowed herself to dream about the future because she was so focused on just surviving the day. She remarked with a touch of her trademark wit,
"It’s funny, I haven’t spent enough time having dreams. And now it’s like, what are my dreams? I realize I don’t know what my goals are,"
The road to this recovery was anything but easy. Selma Blair’s medical history is a cautionary tale of "gaslighting" in the medical industry. Though she was officially diagnosed with MS in August 2018, she had been experiencing symptoms since the age of seven. For nearly 40 years, her issues—ranging from losing vision in one eye to losing control of her bladder—were dismissed by doctors as "anxiety," "depression," or "postpartum exhaustion."

She has been vocal about the gender bias in healthcare, noting that if she had been a boy, she likely would have received an MRI decades sooner. This lifelong battle with undiagnosed juvenile-onset MS led her to develop unique coping mechanisms and wellness habits, including a deep connection to nature and a "can-do" attitude that eventually led her to seek the life-changing treatments she utilizes today.
To achieve her current state of health, Blair famously underwent Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) in 2019. This is an aggressive treatment that essentially "reboots" the immune system by using chemotherapy to wipe it out before reintroducing the patient's own harvested stem cells. While not a "cure," the prognosis for MS patients who respond well to HSCT—like Selma—is often a significant reduction in brain lesions and a long-term halt in disease progression.
However, the journey isn't without hurdles. HSCT is physically taxing and can lead to early menopause, which Selma experienced at age 46. To manage this, she follows a holistic regimen involving Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and specific skincare collaborations designed for "reactive" skin common in autoimmune patients.
Generally, MS carries a variable prognosis, but with modern science, many patients can now lead active, full lives for decades.
Selma’s health journey has been a family affair. She credits her 14-year-old son, Arthur, as her primary source of joy and strength. While she admits that her health issues occasionally meant she had to step back—most notably her emotional exit from Dancing with the Stars in 2022 to protect her bone health—it has also forged an unbreakable bond.
"I’m really in awe of how brave and wonderful he is, and he takes great care of me, too, when at times I need it," she recently shared. Her service dog, Scout, also plays a vital role in her daily life, providing both emotional support and physical assistance, ensuring that Selma’s career and social life can continue to flourish even on tougher days.
While most people won't undergo a stem cell transplant, Selma’s journey offers several "home-grown" wellness tips that anyone dealing with chronic fatigue or inflammation can incorporate:
Anti-Inflammatory Nutrition: Focus on a nutrient-dense diet rich in healthy fats and colorful vegetables to support the brain.
The Power of Movement: Selma advocates for "gentle stamina building," such as short walks in nature or training with a professional (she works with boxing trainer Freddie Roach) to improve balance.
Mindfulness over Stress: Utilizing Transcendental Meditation twice a day to keep the nervous system calm.
Skincare as Healthcare: Using products with Retinal (Vitamin A) and Ceramides to repair the skin barrier, which is often compromised during autoimmune flare-ups.
Selma Blair remains a powerful example of how a diagnosis doesn't have to be an end—it can be a beginning.
